You’ll work on construction projects, installing systems in homes, offices, schools or other buildings. You’ll often work in a series of tasks and according to a schedule, alongside other engineers.

Industry and service

You work on more complex installations within industrial environments or travel to carry out maintenance and resolve faults. Your work is more varied and you often work independently or in small teams.

What does an installation engineer do on site?

As an installation engineer, you work on site at clients’ premises or on construction projects. You ensure that installations are fitted correctly and operate safely.

These are your main tasks:

  • assembling and connecting installations

  • fitting pipes, cables and components

  • installing systems such as central heating, water, ventilation or electrical systems

  • testing, adjusting and commissioning installations

  • troubleshooting faults and carrying out modifications

  • working alongside colleagues on construction sites or in technical rooms

If you work on new-build projects, you’ll be building systems from the ground up. In renovation projects, you’ll replace or adapt existing systems. In a service role, you’ll often be carrying out maintenance and dealing with faults.

Where do you work as an installation engineer?

You’ll work at various locations, depending on the project and the sector. No two days are the same, and you’ll see the results of your work straight away.

Common working environments:

  • construction projects in residential and non-residential building

  • technical rooms in buildings

  • industrial installations and production environments

  • service calls at customers’ premises

The work is hands-on and varied. You’ll be actively involved in technical work and will often collaborate with other fitters and specialists.

What is the difference between an installation engineer and a technical service engineer?

An installation engineer and a technical service engineer both work with installations, but their work differs in terms of the stage of the project and the environment.

The main difference:

  • An installation engineer builds and installs systems

  • A technical service engineer maintains and repairs existing installations

In addition:

  • Installation engineer → often works on projects and construction sites

  • Technical support engineer → works at a single fixed location

  • Installation engineer → assembly and connection

  • Technical support engineer → faults and maintenance

Do you want to build systems from the ground up? Then an installation engineer role is a better fit. If you prefer to work on existing systems within a company, then a technical support engineer role is a better fit.

How much does an installation engineer earn?

Your salary depends on your experience, the type of installations and your working environment.

These are the guidelines:

  • Junior: €2,500 to €3,000

  • Mid-level: €3,000 to €4,200

  • Senior: €4,000 to €5,000 or more

If you work on complex installations or in industry, the salary is often higher. Extras such as travel time allowance, bonuses and certifications also affect your income.

Working as an installation engineer: what can you expect?

Your working day depends on the project, but often follows a set structure.

A working day usually consists of:

  • starting on site or at the project

  • going through the schedule or work orders

  • assembling and connecting installations

  • testing and checking systems

  • coordinating with colleagues or other disciplines

  • completing and recording your work

If you work in the field, you’ll regularly move between different sites. If you’re working on a large project, you’ll often spend longer periods at the same location.

When is a job as an installation engineer right for you?

A job as an installation engineer is right for you if you enjoy hands-on work and like setting up and connecting installations on projects.

This role is a good fit for you if you:

enjoy working on construction sites or projects

enjoy building installations from scratch

work alongside other fitters and tradespeople

want variety in your working environment and the projects you work on

have technical insight and enjoy working with your hands

Do you prefer to work at a single fixed location, or are you more focused on fault-finding and maintenance? If so, a role as a technical support or service engineer might be a better fit.
