

Mechanical engineers often have a background in mechanical engineering, mechatronics or a related discipline at higher national education (HBO) or university (WO) level. Engineers with experience in CAD design or machine construction can also progress into mechanical engineering.
During your studies, you will learn to work with 3D CAD software, carry out technical calculations and engage in product development. In practice, you will further develop your skills by working on machines, prototypes and technical installations within the fields of mechanical engineering, high-tech or industry.

A working day as a mechanical engineer usually consists of a combination of design work, technical discussions and coordination with other disciplines. You work on machines, modules or entire production lines that are actually built and used.
For example, you might start by modifying a 3D design in SolidWorks or Inventor. You then consult with software and electrical engineers about the interfaces between hardware, control systems and mechanics. In between, you liaise with production or assembly teams to check whether components can be manufactured effectively.
When working on prototypes or new machines, you are often also involved in testing, improvements and optimisations in the workshop or test environment.
Many mechanical engineers work in the mechanical engineering sector. There, you develop production machinery, transport systems, packaging lines or automation solutions for industrial applications.
In the high-tech sector, you work on precision systems and complex modules where tolerances, precision and innovation are key.
In the energy sector, you might work on installations, renewable energy systems or technical infrastructure. Tasks relating to piping and structural engineering are also common here, involving work on pipework networks, steel structures and technical installations. Commonly used software in this field includes ANSYS, AutoPlant 3D and P&ID.
Within production environments and industry, mechanical engineers are also responsible for optimisations, technical improvements and new installations.
In the commercial and institutional sector, you will work on technical installations for offices, hospitals, schools and other buildings, amongst others. Common disciplines include HVAC and heat pump systems, where you will work with software such as Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD and BTM software.
